Hawks are classified as members of Kingdom Animalia. These birds came under the phylum Chordata and class-specific to them is called Aves. These are members of the family Accipitridae. Almost 200 species of hawks are present worldwide. They live in different habitats, climates, and consumption depends on the availability of food.
These birds are present in all the continents except Antarctica including Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, China, Somalia, America, and many others Some inhabit trees, some near ground, some are on grassy areas and cliffs. They usually lay brown eggs with spots and range from 3 to 6 in number.
During the early period of their life, they are dependent on their parents, when they grow up, leave their nests. After six weeks of their birth. They preferred hunting when daylight minimizes, just before the night. Some of them are gentle and speak less. When they fly, spread their wings rapidly and then glide in a smooth direction through the air. The hawks who travel in groups and flocks are having more chances of survival than traveling alone.
Hawks’ characteristics and their types
The flying speed of hawks is 120mph and they do not offer their prey, a second chance. They have 99% in perceiving their food meal. These are known as the most intelligent birds of class Aves. They usually dip the prey in water before killing and pick up their prey even from their nests without any falter. They usually mate at the age of three years. These birds are monogamous and live in a relationship for many years. Their flight time is usually 10 minutes.

The breeding and nesting period starts during the spring season from March to May. The incubation period is of 28 to 32 days. The period during which babies learn the process of flying and hunting is of 10 weeks. Female is larger and consumes larger prey as compared to males. The average weight of engulfing prey is 300g. food intake is dependent on the season.
The consumption of food increases in winters, before the process of migration, and before laying eggs in the case of females. The quantity of food also depends on the size, species, and sex of birds. They mostly live-in fields, deserts, mountains, urban areas, woodlands, grasslands and easily find their prey. Different species of hawks and their habitat are following
Red-tailed hawk
It is the most abundant species of hawk present in the world. They can be identified by their tail or red-brown. They are prevalent in every state of the U.S. they are adopting different types of habitats depending on the conditions and availability of food.
Cooper’s hawk
These birds are of medium size and are mostly found in different types of woodlands. They are globally present similar to the red-tailed hawk. Their number decreases in the 19th century due to excessive use of pesticides. Now they are recovering to be a stable community. They usually eat doves, blackbirds, and starlings.
Ferruginous hawk
This type of bird is mostly present in desserts, grasslands, and prairies. They prefer open areas for easy hunting. These are commonly present in southwestern areas of the world. These birds are less in number now due to more hunting practices and the loss of their natural habitat.
Swinson’s hawk
They usually migrate from far distances in fall and winter. These hawks are most commonly present in west plains and grasslands. Their population is also declining due to excessive use of different chemicals including pesticides.
List of food items
Hawks are carnivores and mostly dependent on dead animals and hunted live animals. Their eating preferences change according to their habitat, surroundings, and available food items. They mostly at mice, lizards, rats, rabbits, snakes, and other birds.
Most of the hawks depend on
- Birds
- Rabbits
- Snakes
- Rats
- Insects
- Mice
- Lizards
- Songbirds
- Squirrels
- Grouse
- Woodpeckers
- Dragonflies
- Grasshoppers
- Insect’s larvae
- Sparrows
- Robbins
- Warblers
Owls and snakes
Owls are not hunted for food by the hawks. They attack owls to protect their nests and babies from other predators. Clashes between different birds are not much common in birds of the animal kingdom. They consume amphibians and reptiles daily as their favorite food. They hunt snakes in clear areas where forests are less in number. Hawks are not only dependent on snakes but they also eat small aquatic and terrestrial animals including some crabs.
Birds, foxes, rabbits, and ducks
Hawks usually eat birds that are smaller in size and contribute as a maximum portion of their diet. They hunt birds that are flying in groups and flocks such as robins and some songbirds. Therefore, backyard areas with birds feeding are the most important hunting areas for hawks. Hawks usually attack their prey from above, especially foxes, no one prey can resist that attack because of their abrupt nature.
Adult hawks are strong enough to transport hunted foxes to their nests for eating purposes. Hawks cannot transport a large duck easily so they use their sharp claws for transportation. Some breeds of ducks attack back and thus are dangerous for hawks. They prefer to inhabit and hunt in wide areas and consume rabbits too.
Fruits, vegetables, and grasses
As hawks are carnivores, they are only dependent on meat either live or dead. Fruits, vegetables, berries, and grasses are not part of their diet.
Eating habits of hawks in wild areas
They live in different insects and invertebrates such as moths, grasshoppers, crayfish, dragonflies, prawns, snakes, turtles, lizards, and other reptiles are also included. Some hawks have to be surrendered due to dangerous snake bites during hunting. They love to eat some mammals such as rabbits, squirrels, rodents, and gophers. They can even hunt members of their cousin’s family. Hummingbirds, pheasants, waterfowl, and quail are also consumed by hawks in some cases.
Diet in winter season
In the winter season, many of their food ingredients migrated, hidden somewhere, or hibernated under snow. So limited food sources are available for hawks such as small rodents and some dead animals.
Diet of baby hawks
The Diet of baby chicks is dependent on their location and availability. they usually eat small creatures such as crap, lizards, insects, and crustaceans. Up to 2 to 4 weeks, they eat regurgitated food offered by their mothers.
Methods of hunting
Different species of hawks have different methods of hunting which are discussed in the following.
Co-operative hunting
This method will work when different hawks work together in search of their prey, especially larger animals. Usually, one bird moves into that area and other birds wait to target and kill the prey.
Low soaring method
This type of method is mostly used in open areas where these birds fly near the ground in search of food. This strategy depends on two factors: purpose and birds’ movement. They usually spot their prey from a distance, approach them, and then attack for eating purposes.
High soaring method
Birds with larger wings can fly on high areas for long periods, which protects their prey from danger. They occasionally fly down to hunt and kill other animals and birds.
Aerial pursuit
This method depends on the fast-hunting speed of predators in dense forests. It is linked with speed and surprises. This method of hunting mostly caught birds, due to their fast-moving habits.
Perch and swoop method
This method can be adopted without starting flying. Hawks usually select a tree as their targeted area. Once they see prey, they fly down to catch and hunt the birds.
Hover and pounce method
In this method, hawks fly in lower areas to find small creatures. They hold tightly the animal and then move down for pouncing.
Impacts of hawk’s diet on other species
Hawks play a vital role in balancing the ecosystem. As predators, they eat mammals and some rodents which keep different populations in control. Decreasing the population of rodents has a helpful effect on the human population and directly protects our crops from destruction and wasting. Sometimes hawks and sparrows share the same nest. Whenever a hawk builds a nest, a sparrow approaches the nest and lives with hawks in a relationship of commensalism. For some other birds, hawks are usually creating trouble.
The attraction for hawks in the backyard
It is the quite uncommon activity of hawks to attack pets including dogs and cats. Appealing hawks in the backyard has many profits. Through hunting, they keep rodents, mice, raccoons, and other small animals away from residential areas. These are also safe for your pet fishes in the pound because they do not have diving habits to catch their prey.
They also hunt some mammals and snakes which is also beneficial for people living around. For providing attractions for the hawks, we should provide them suitable habitat for nesting and proper food to eat. Tall trees with dense branches are suitable for them. The strategy of dispersing nuts and seeds to attract rats is beneficial, which further attracts hawks for their food.
