What Do Buzzards Eat? A Complete Guide!

Buzzards are classified as members of Kingdom Animalia. These birds came under the phylum Chordata and class-specific to them is called Aves. These are members of the family Accipitridae, order Assipitriformes, and genus called Buteo.

These birds are mostly present in Greece, France, Ireland, England, Russia, Mongolia China, India, and other Asian countries. Those birds which live in colder weather,

The buzzards are one of the common birds living in the UK. Their population was more than quadrupled up to 1970 and are called common birds of prey.  In the whole world, there are almost 2, 100, 000 to 3, 700,000 common buzzards present.

The European countries have 1, 630, 000 to 2, 170, 000 mature individuals of buzzards present. The word buteo is a Latin word called hawk. These birds sometimes called tourist eagles are by European people mistakenly.

There are 28 subspecies of these birds. Some of them are Buteo buteo rothschildi, Buteo buteo menetriesi, Buteo buteo Arrigoni, and Buteo buteo vulpinus.

Certain Characteristics of Buzzards

They usually build their nest in march and continue it till May. They usually perform an aerial flight to attract their male partners. Both partners first choose their partners and after becoming a pair, they start to build their nests.

Instead of twigs and other materials used for nesting, they find a cave or hole in the ground, or a tree to lay their eggs. Some buzzards use sticks or foliage to build their nest. The females lay two to three creamy white-colored eggs and have brown speckles on them. Both males and females sit on eggs and hatch after 30 to 40 days of brooding.

When the babies hatch, they are covered by a whitish membrane and are so weak just after their birth. They rarely face the threat from other birds and animals. some old and bald eagles can easily kill babies’ buzzards.

Whenever someone disturbs them while making nests, they regurgitate or vomit on them and pretend to be dead. In this way, they protect themselves by regurgitating undigested meat. Due to the foul smell, the intruders are kept away from their nests.

Males hunt food for the females and young ones. The newborn babies are called chicks. The chicks have a full covering of feathers 50 to 60 days after their birth. After almost 16 weeks, they become strong enough to live their own life.

These birds usually use the same nest each year, from time to time they change the size and shape of their nest and can repair them. The color of their feathers varies from brown to white in color. They are large in size with a hooked beak and big eyes.

Their length ranges from15 to 22 inches and their weight is almost 1 to 3 pounds. Females carry more weight as compared to males so males can fly better due to their lesser weight. Their wingspan is from 42 to 53 inches.

Returning birds

They can live in almost all habitats such as woodlands, moorlands, farmlands, and also in some urban areas. Their population is having almost 67,000 breeding pairs. In previous years, their population decreased but now it is recovering by less use of pesticides and limiting persecution.

Other species of buzzards

The following two species are rarely present in the UK. One is a rough-legged buzzard. Its scientific name is Buteo lagopus. It is much similar to the common buzzard and almost has a similar diet plan.

A smaller number of these birds travel from Scandinavia to the UK in the winter season. The other is honey buzzard and its scientific name is Pernis apivorus.

This bird is also migratory. Their population is increasing day by day because of their attraction towards a warming environment dissimilar to African cold grounds.

what do buzzards eat

What Do Buzzards Eat?

These birds are carnivores and are excellent at hunting different types of animals. their diet ingredients are shrews, reptiles, rabbits, rats, squirrels, voles, birds, and hedgehogs. They can also eat some insects, wasps, larvae vertebrates, and invertebrates.

They can consume both live and dead insects. Buzzards are flexible eaters and easily capture prey. Their diet also consists of a large number of frogs, snakes, beetles, hares, and weasels. These birds are having difficulty seeing in the dark, so they will try to find food during their daytime.

They get up after 9 AM when the temperature starts heating the ground. They can easily survive without food for longer periods. They often do overfeed when they find an excess of food. In one sitting, they can eat 25% of their body weight, but it can cause problems late during flight.

Pigeons and seagulls

They can easily consume crows and pigeons as their preferred targets. They can hunt these animals from the ground and also from the air. Some seagulls are so large to predate, but little chicks can be a target for these birds.

Rabbits and cats

Almost all buzzards consume rabbits. 60% of their diet consists of rabbits in European countries. They usually target younger rabbits or smaller species of rabbits. Some species of these birds can easily hunt and consume fully grown hares and rabbits.

Cats are not easily predated because they have faster speed, sharp claws, and teeth. Therefore, cats are not common prey for buzzards.

Squirrels, crows, and mice

They love to eat crows as pigeons. They usually target and hunt small chicks of crows from the air as well as the ground. Mice are also good sources of their diet. Before picking mice, these birds hover on a tree for perfect striking.

For hunting, mice precision is necessary because mice are too small to capture and handle. Buzzards are experts in catching mice. For capturing rats, they utilize the same process. These birds can easily consume squirrels and they cover much proportion of their diet.

Owls and snakes

Owls are not hunted for food by the hawks. They attack owls to protect their nests and babies from other predators. Clashes between different birds are not much common in birds of the animal kingdom.

They consume amphibians and reptiles daily as their favorite food. They hunt snakes in clear areas where forests are less in number. Hawks are not only dependent on snakes but they also eat small aquatic and terrestrial animals including some crabs.

Methods of hunting

They fly close to the ground and attack their prey. Unlike, attacking from the height to the ground, they prefer to attack the prey close to their ground. They can hunt their own species members, depending on the conditions.

They are predators and hunters depending on the opportunity.  Along with scavenging, they can eat carrion but carrion does not make a majority of their diet.

Co-operative hunting

This method will work when different hawks work together in search of their prey, especially larger animals. Usually, one bird moves into that area and other birds wait to target and kill the prey.

Low soaring method

This type of method is mostly used in open areas where these birds fly near the ground in search of food. This strategy depends on two factors: purpose and birds’ movement. They usually spot their prey from a distance, approach them, and then attack for eating purposes.

High soaring method

Birds with larger wings can fly on high areas for long periods, which protects their prey from danger. They occasionally fly down to hunt and kill other animals and birds.

What Do Buzzards Eat in the wild?

The genus Buteo contains almost 30 species of buzzards. These birds are carnivores, but their diet ingredients may vary depending on the availability of food items. These birds prefer to eat rabbits, rats, voles, insects, and some small mammals. Their diet mostly consists of 60% rabbits. They can hunt some birds such as crows, pigeons, parrots, and woodpeckers.

What Do Buzzards Eat in winter?

Most of these birds are residents of northern areas and are migratory, and live their winter weather in African countries. Along with the summer diet which consists of wasp, bees, and in winter they can consume birds, rodents, and mammals.

Eating live or dead animals

Most of their diet consists of mammals, rodents, rats, pigeons, and crows. If the live animal is not available, they can survive on dead carrion, especially in the winter season or when prey is deficient.

Baby chicks

Males hunt food for the females and young ones. The newborn babies are called chicks. The chicks have a full covering of feathers 50 to 60 days after their birth. After almost 16 weeks, they become strong enough to live their own life.

They offer their chicks regurgitated food and care for them 10 to 11 weeks. After the next 6 to 8 hours, they are able to live their life independently. All members of the same family stay together up to the autumn season.

How to attract them to gardens

These birds are most common in North Wales, Cumbria, and Scotland. But if you disperse the leftover meat in your garden and it will attract different buzzards to your garden. The best time to attract them in your backyard is early morning or early evening. Sometimes you can see these birds flying high in the sky over your garden.
