Types of blue butterflies

These blue butterflies are residents of some parts of North America including Oregon and California. Male butterflies are slightly different from females. Males have black and blue edges at the start of their wings. Females have wings with brown and blue edges. 

Scolitantides Orion

These types of blue butterflies live in Russia, Europe, and some areas of Japan. Their wing span is so small which is 20 to 25mm. they are shiny, having purple color with black spots on them. These butterflies have variations in their sizes and are mostly visible in the months of March, April, May, June, and August.

Leptotes Webbianus

These butterflies live on Canary Island and are called Canary blue butterflies. Their wingspan is 28 to 34mm. Males have blue and back mixed colors. While females are a mixture of golden and brown colors. From March to August, these butterflies live at a height of 3000 meters.

The life cycle of blue butterflies

The average life period of blue butterflies is almost 4 months. 120 days are required for the conversion of an egg to a dead butterfly. The life span of an adult butterfly is almost 15 to 20 days. Larvae are pale green in color whereas caterpillars are reddish brown in color. Small yellow patches are also present on the back of caterpillars. They also have hair on them which irritates human skin. They produce a very strong toxic type smell to get protection from predators. From an insect to the pupa stage, molting occurs 5 times.

Diet plan of blue butterflies in different stages

The caterpillars are dependent on the vegetation on which they are born. Leaves of pea family plants are their favorite ones.  The larvae usually feed on different species of plants such as Rhamnaceae, Tiliaceae, Musaceae, Palmae, Myrtaceae, Guttiferae, and Leguminosae.

The adults sip, as they cannot chew. They get food with the help of an elongated mouth part called a proboscis. Unlike other butterflies, blue butterflies are dependent on rotten fruits, fungi, carcasses of dead animals, or fermented food. Other butterflies are dependent on the nectar of different fruits and vegetables.

They have quick detection of food items due to their sensory apparatus which is present on their front appendages. Their life span is only 115 days. They spend most of their time in the processes of eating and reproducing.

The caterpillars of blue butterflies’ molt 5 times before entering the next stage. They form green chrysalises and respond to ultrasonic waves when they are not feeling comfortable. After the maturation of pupae, they form chrysalises as adult butterflies.

Goldenrod and Rock cress
